Does your business need a mobile app or just a website?

AppsUpdated

Many business owners ask whether they need an app. Often a good website is enough, but sometimes an app is the right tool. This guide helps you decide.

Start with a website

For most businesses, a website comes first. It is how customers find you in search, learn what you do and contact you. It works on every device with no download, and it is usually cheaper to build and maintain than an app.

When a mobile app makes sense

An app is worth considering when:

  • People will use it repeatedly, such as daily or weekly, not once.
  • It needs phone features, such as the camera, notifications, offline access or location.
  • It handles private working data, and you want it stored on the device.
  • It is a tool for staff or customers, not just marketing.
  • The experience matters, such as smooth gestures or a game.

If someone visits once, reads your hours and leaves, a website serves them better.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. Who is the user, and what do they need to do?
  2. How often will they do it?
  3. Could a website do the same job? A mobile-friendly web page covers a lot.
  4. Do I need offline use or phone features?
  5. Can I maintain it? Apps need updates for new iOS versions and for fixes.
  6. Does it need accounts and a server, or can it work alone on the device?

Costs and effort to expect

An app has more moving parts than a website. You need an Apple Developer account to publish on the App Store, a privacy policy, store listing assets, testing on real devices and review by Apple. After launch you need to keep it updated. See our guide on getting an app on the App Store.

Website, app, or both

  • Website only: marketing, information, simple bookings, lead forms.
  • App only: a tool used by a specific group, for example a field-service or job-tracking tool.
  • Both: a website that explains and sells, plus an app for ongoing use. This is common.

A real example

QuotePro is an iPhone app for deck contractors. It tracks customers, quotes, job photos, schedules and payments, and stores everything on the phone. It suits an app because contractors use it daily on job sites and want their data to stay private. Their company website, by contrast, is a separate job: helping homeowners find and contact them.
