How to give your web developer access to your domain

DomainsUpdated

When Forsyth Development builds your website, we need to connect your domain to it. You own the domain, so you stay in control: you invite us to your account, and you can remove us whenever you like. This guide explains how that works in general terms.

What we do and do not need

  • You buy and own the domain, in an account created with your own email.
  • We ask to be added as an administrator or delegate on that account while we work, so we can update the settings that point the domain at your site.
  • We never need your password. Do not share your login with anyone, including us. Use your registrar's invitation feature instead.

How to add us

Every registrar words this a little differently, and the screens change over time, so look for the option in your account called something like Users, Team, Sharing, Delegate access or Account access.

  1. Sign in to your registrar account.
  2. Find the section for managing people or access.
  3. Choose Invite, Add user or Delegate.
  4. Enter the email address we gave you and select the access level that lets someone manage the domain's settings.
  5. Send the invitation, then tell us. We will accept it and confirm what we can see.

If your registrar does not offer shared access, tell us. We can send you the exact settings to change yourself instead.

What access level to choose

Choose the lowest level that lets us manage the domain's settings. We do not need access to billing or to your payment method. Keep the ability to transfer or delete the domain to yourself.

Taking access back

You can remove our access at any time from the same section of your account. After you remove it, your website keeps working, as long as the settings we made are left in place.

Keep the account healthy

  1. Use a strong password and two-factor authentication.
  2. Keep auto-renew on, and keep your payment method up to date.
  3. Keep your contact email current, so renewal and verification notices reach you.

Questions

Who owns the domain? You do, as the account holder. Our terms state that you are responsible for finding, purchasing and renewing your own domain name and that you keep ownership of it.

Who pays for it? You, directly to your registrar. Domain registration and renewal fees are not part of the monthly website plan.

What if I have not bought a domain yet? Start with how to buy a domain name.
